In the world of Georges Saulterre unusual images are put together, they blend together with subjects he discovers, he captures and they harmonize with the fantastic shapes he creates. Bizarre shapes which nourish the bizarre style of Saulterre’s work in a world that is too small for him.
His birth at Conegliano Veneto (Italy) near Venice maybe helped form his artistic vocation.
With a French father and an Italian mother, his youth in this
part of Venetia so full of culture, baroque music, carnivals, parties, masks
was without any doubt the reason why his artistic influences varied. And maybe
that’s what people reproach him today: it’s hard to give him a definite label,
a unique sense of creativity. He is famous for his monumental sculptures, while
his minute works: sculptures in clay, in bronze, in cement, in ceramic are shown
everywhere in the world.
After his studies, he chose l’Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris.
Very quickly he confirmed his direction in life :1st exhibitions at 22 in Paris.
He discovers his true vocation, through his need to create with heavy materials, iron, bronze, cement thanks to his natural ability for huge spatial awareness and to work with raw materials.
In fact, here lies his true nature. Artist of the mineral, this Gargantuan eager to create is a character born of Rabelais. Everywhere in his everyday life you can get to know him, examples include the way in which he receives you and also the captivating personality of a tall and good natural man. His house, in a ferry-boat shape that he created himself with large open spaces, his garden where he works on his monumental sculptures, where he assembles and welds them and that you would believe devoted to future skyscrapers or other stainless steel sheets that he can only moves with winches. This man displays a talent beyond measure.
While he was making his name through other exhibitions in the world : Melbourne, Paris, New York, Moissac Abbey – Cavaillon, he was working on an exhibition for the Bénédictine Palace in Fécamp.
Millions of people pass his works everyday. He is one of the first sculptor to have materialized the idea of monumental sculptures on motorways and in nuclear stations.
One can see his works on the French motorways as soon as one leaves Paris.
“Les flèches des cathédrales”/ the cathedrals ‘ spires (motorway Chartres-Orléans), « Sur les traces des Vikings / on the Vikings’steps (at the Criqueboeuf bridge in Rouen), « Les orgues / the Organs ( at Isbergues – Pas de Calais), “A l’aube des temps / at the dawn of the times” ( at Antibes’ toll, and somme walls too : in clay and mirrors at la Défense, at Deuil la Barre,a sculpture for Elf Nigeria, some trophies; trophy of quality for Eurotunnel, Mercedes Elf and the Calais laces’federation, a monumental figure of Jean Bertin’s hovertrain at Gif sur Yvette.
His life-style is very much a chosen one far from the obligatory events or the Parisian society worldliness.
This amazing man’s artistic abilities are now at their peak.
He doesn’t only notice the details, he collects them, he stores them until it is the right time to use them.
Alongside may exhibitions he is getting ready for more and more works of huge proportions. He has just entered the Guinness Book of Records for the “biggest sculpture ever created by a man”. Only the Japanese Buddhas or from Sri Lanka, as well as the American presidents’ monument are bigger but they were sculpted by armies of workers directed by a project manager.
